Updates: Improved dates and Source/Person renaming

June 18th, 2009

Hello Quotikians,

It has been a long time coming and I’m glad to finally announce that Quotiki has support for BC dates! Not only that, the system now supports partial dates as well. You may enter just the year, a year and a month, or the full day, month and year. Dates are now considered to be null if the year field is cleared, as a day and month without a year are fairly meaningless. Similarly, the day will be ignored if no month is specified. Also, in keeping with international standards, the date display format has been changed to DD/MM/YYYY (though the year won’t always be 4 digits).

A big goal for us since taking over the old site has been to deal with all of the duplicate quotes and people. Sometimes redundancy can be a good thing. However, when it comes to the quotes, people and sources on our site, we’d like to make sure there’s only one copy (apart from those in our database backups, of course =). This is why we’ve rolled out a feature which allows you to rename people and sources. If someone uploaded a quote and misspelled the author’s name, you can now edit that author and correct the name. If there is already a person entry with the correct name, the quotes associated with the misspelled name will be automatically moved to the proper person and the misspelled entry will be removed. We’re going to be correcting duplicate person and source entries as we see them and we now want to let you do the same.

As always, feel free to leave a comment or contact us if you have any questions or criticism, positive or negative, about Quotiki.

New features

March 5th, 2009

You may have noticed a few new features on Quotiki if you’ve been browsing around lately.

New implemented features

Tags tab

The first, and most major, change is the Tags tab we’ve added to user profiles.  We’ve made it easy to see the tags a user has used and what they’ve used them on.  To see what has been tagged with one tag in particular, simply click it and the list will be updated with only items that have the tag.

If you’re viewing the Tags tab on your own profile, you’ll notice a small “x” appear when you hover your mouse over a tagging.  Click it to remove the tag you added to the item under which it is listed.

Easy quote favoriting

Hover your mouse over the favorite icon (the star) on a quote in a list of quotes and you’ll see a “Favorite quote” link appear.  Click this link to add the quote to your favorites without leaving the current list.

Planned features

Quotiki is still under heavy development.  Here are a few of the exciting features currently in the works:

  • Quote lists - Instead of just having a favorites list, you’ll be able to create your own lists, name them whatever you want, and add any combination of quotes to them!
  • Rich media support - Soon you’ll be able to add pictures, audio and video (from popular video sharing websites) to quote, person and source pages.
  • Widgets and Apps - We know widgets have been missing since the launch of the new Quotiki.  We’re working to release a better, more feature rich widget that will be able to draw its displayed quotes from a variety of sources (posted quotes, favorites, quote of the day, lists, etc).  We also see a facebook app on the horizon!

If you have any suggestions, don’t hesitate to leave a comment or contact us.
